Why is TIRE silk filament such a superior thread ?
Differences between 'FILAMENT' and 'SPUN' SILKWe have all heard or observed the pulling of the silk thread from the coccon. What has not been explained, is that within every raw cocoon there are many layers of silk fibers that are of different qualities and types of silk fiber. Most the the cocoons that we see will have some of several of those lesser types of 'by products' of silk already removed. Then within the white cocoon shell (that we are familiar with) there are also other qualityllayers of silk fiber. But it isn't until the most inter most region of the cocoos (approximately 28 % iof the entire cocoon), that a truly consistant type of fiber is produced by the silk worm. It is the this consistancy of the fiber that is important to the silk reeling millss in the production of filament silk threads. Therefore about 72 % of the cocoon is 'waste silk' (less consistant and quality of silk fiber) that is utilized for spun silk thread. The spun silk threads contitute the majority of silk fibers utilized for silk fabric manufacture. Damaged and imperfect cocoons can also be processed and utilized for the spinning of the silk fibers to produce the spun silk thread. Although 'spun silk fibers' are a true silk it is the difference in availability and quality that the 'fiament silk' fibers can demand a higher price. The filament fibers do require further twisting processes to improve their handling capabilities and performance but these are much different than the spinning processes neceassary to develop thread from the wste silk. Alll of the TIRE silk thread consists of high quality Grade A filament silk, promising better performance and best color and luminosty. our spun silk fabrics Filament vs. Spun Silk as a Passing ThreadA passing thread means-- a strand of material that passes through other fibers for decoration, for attachment or layering purposes. Of course, filament silk will make the superior passing thread because of its completely smooth surface that reduces resistance as it passes through the layers. Many other fibers require their short fibers to be twisted to provide a long, continuous strand. Therefore, spun sewing thread will naturally offer a degree of passing resistance.
