Adding Digital Printing to your Silk Arsenal

Digital printing on silk assembled by Maggie

We are always looking for exciting, easy ways to expand our collection of embellishments techniques on the silks.

Imaging SILK FABRIC SHEETS from the printer

The new 'silk fabric sheets' developed for accepting colored inks from printers, has given us a new opportunity for 'color embellishing' silks. These sheets have been pretreated with special chemistry, to assure you that the inks will be accepted by the silk fibers. There are 'do it yourself' methods of attaching silk fabric to paper, but we suggest the commercially produced fabric sheets for consistant performance and your convenience.

We have experiemented with using the silk digital prints and find them to be very compatible with the Colorhue dyes and the Lumiere/Neopaque paints. The black and white printed image can be be easily colored with various applications of the Colorhue dyes and Lumiere/Neopaque/ paints.

Even colored images produced on the silk fabric sheets can be quickly and easily overdyed with the Colorhue for tonal differences or even color enhancing the silks designs, themselves. As we develop more dyeing and painting processes with the digital images, we will keep you informed.

The pillow illustrated above gives an example of the use of the 'silk digital sheet'. Val copied and printed on a piece of silk charmuese this wonderful black and white image of an 'Oriental Waif', taken from one of her fabulous old book collections. In turn, I lightly over- dyed the silk and stylized the image with appropriate types of silk, 'colored' to complete the entire pillow design.

In the meantime, here are some easy ways to obtain a large variety of interesting CD images that can be utilzed for a myriad of decorative projects.

V V Prints (Victorian Prints), one of our loyal Silk Experience sponsors, has a large array of digital images taken from her extensive collection of old books. Val Vavrick takes particular pains to do a professional job of ''cleaning up' the images she presents on her CD disks. And you are able to resize her printable designs without distorting their color or register. She offers a wonderful variety of Cd's, all the way from Angels to Wildflowers and don't miss the Japan 1 & 2 Cd collection.

Val also sells the 'silk fabric sheets in several weaves and weights', available on her web site.

Don't miss seeing beautiful CD disks from a nature photo artist from Japan, Takuo Hirata. Hirata is also one of our Silk Experience lecturer's and a Japanese business partner. Val specially features his amazing images on his own web site. These prints, placed on the silk fabric sheets can make wonderful images forembellishing quilting, art to wear and home decor.

Or these gorgeous pictures (basically taken in Japan) are perfect images printed on paper stationary, christmas cards or greeting cards or a myriad of other decorative uses.
